2012 Conference Logo Competition

This competition began Thursday, March 3 with the announcement of the 2012 EAST Conference theme: Innovation Generation. Following are the submission requirements.

What is a Logo?

Before you begin the design phase, take some time for research and inspiration. A logo is a simple graphic representation of a theme, concept or identity. A logo can be a type treatment, an icon or a combination of both. It must be easily reproduced in a variety of different processes: on a monitor and in print on many types of materials from paper to bags to t-shirts. A good resource is http://www.smashingmagazine.com. Search for “logos”.

Submission Guidelines

The logo should represent or enhance the theme. It should be a graphic representation. Other things to think about when brainstorming your design:

  • This is the 16th year EAST has had an impact on students, schools and communities.
  • This is the 13th annual EAST Conference.
  • Students from third grade to beyond high school participate in EAST.
  • Remember our EAST Essentials: self-direction, teamwork, service and technology.

Tips for Creating a Logo

  • Make sure your design communicates the Conference theme.
  • Use simple shapes and typefaces.
  • Do not use photographs.
  • Use a distinct color scheme (1-3 colors max). If you use more than 1 color, please also provide a 1-color version.
  • Create logo in a vector format (Adobe Illustrator, Freehand), so it can be enlarged to huge proportions (signs, banners, etc.)
  • Make sure your logo will work on any background color and in any media/situation.
  • Be creative!

Artwork MUST be original

  • Get ideas from the internet and elsewhere, but do not use another designer’s work!
  • Photographs should not be used unless absolutely integral to the design, and may need a special treatment or adjustment to make it easily readable and reproducible. If photographs are used, the designer must have permission to use them.
  • No clip art please! Use the tools in your classroom, such as Adobe Illustrator or another vector drawing program.

File Specifications

  • Must be created in a vector drawing application and saved as Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or Encapsulated PostScript (.eps) Click here for Adobe Illustrator template.
  • Send your original document with layers intact. Do not merge layers.
  • Include type fonts, or at least the names of fonts used.
  • Provide JPG proof along with the vector file.
  • Provide the design on a light background and on a dark background.
  • You may be asked to revise your design for reproduction or other issues. Be sure to keep original work.
  • Name your file using your first and last name (example: sallysmith.ai). If you submit more than one file, follow the same guidelines and add a number at the end. (example: sallysmith1.ai, sallysmith2.ai, etc.).
  • Think of all the possibilities! Remember, logo will be featured prominently on website, T-shirts, programs, banners and more!
